Limestone Hills of My Hometown

During my AFS Year in New Zealand, I was asked about the surrounding landscape where I live! That got me stumped! You see, I've lived in Perak (Batu Gajah, Taiping, Ipoh) most of my life and I never stopped for a moment to ponder what my hometown has to offer.

Yes, I was equipped with all the general information on Malaysia.... and just assumed that it applies to all the places in Malaysia. It took me a while to visualise the surroundings and realised... yes we have beautiful limestone hills!

I remember going to Tambun Hot Springs in the evenings to soak in the man made hot pools. My dad loved the natural sauna and would shut himself in one of the little cubicles built on top of bubbling, sulphuric hot pools.

I also remember the huge Tasik Cement Factory that can be seen along the road leading to Taiping. My dad would explain to us that the cement is made from the limestone. And that parts of the hills is where they extracted marble from.

It is sad to see these hills ravaged to make cement and marble. Sigh.. the price we pay for development!

And in recent years, whenever we travel up north to Perak, my husband is always marvelling the majestic view of the limestone hills all along the PLUS Highway.
Its a pleasure to be driving amidst beautiful landscape with the clouds playing mindgames in the clear blue sky!

I would love to be able to wake up to this kind of view every morning!!
